The Importance of Building Your Own Bomb Shelter
Kristin Bird

     There is an economy --
not of spirit, but of balance --
in pictures of your mom and dad.

Banana split hair, a whale of a cigar.
Colors that didn't know any better.
The godforsaken carpet.

They saved lawns
one by one that year,
pretended time could be bought
with iron.

When morning came,
they were alone
and ecstatic:

Nobody but us, they said,
could be responsible for this.

They were thinking of the first
war, cat, cold.
The beautiful baby. The animal car.
